Additional Information

Falls are a leading cause of injury in adults aged over 65 - with one-third of all older adults suffering from at least one fall a year. There is good evidence that appropriate exercise can prevent falls. This workshop will provide an overview of the issue of falls in older people - the risk factors for falls and the evidence for fall prevention intervention. Participants will gain an understanding of the effects of ageing on balance and sensorimotor systems important for falls - conduct falls risk screening and assessments - and develop falls prevention exercise programs - considering the needs and medical conditions common in older people. In order to register for this course you must have a Certificate III or IV in Fitness AND have completed the elective unit: SISFFIT314A Plan and deliver exercise to older clients with managed conditions.

Neuroscience Research Australia (POWMRI Limited)

The Falls - Balance and Injury Research Centre (FBIRC) - NeuRA directed by Professor Stephen Lord - conducts research into understanding human balance - fall risk factors and strategies for preventing falls in older people. The overarching aims of the FBIRC involve: (i) the accurate documentation of falls and fall injuries (ii) the identification of fall risk factors (iii) the development of feasible fall prevention strategies and iv) the effective management of people with a fall-related injury. Managed by the FBIRC - the NSW Fall Prevention & Healthy Ageing Network aims to support practitioners to improve the lives of older people through healthy ageing initiatives with a focus on preventing falls and fall-related injuries. We work closely with researchers - policymakers - health practitioners and community service providers in the development and promotion of healthy ageing services and programs with a focus on preventing falls and fall-related injuries.
