Additional Information

This course introduces fitness professionals to the Social Model of Disability—a transformative framework that shifts the focus from individual impairment to societal barriers. Instead of viewing disability as a medical problem to be fixed, the social model recognises that exclusion, inaccessibility, and ableism are the true sources of disadvantage.

Through engaging written content, video lessons, and reflection tasks, participants will explore how attitudes, systems, and environments shape the experiences of people with disability. The course unpacks how language, gym design, assumptions, and service delivery can either reinforce or dismantle barriers.

The course supports fitness professionals in challenging outdated models (like the charity or medical models), understanding their role in systemic change, and building inclusive, rights-based practices. The module also introduces practical strategies—such as person-centred communication, inclusive programming, and rethinking support needs versus labels.

Participants are invited to reflect on their own professional assumptions, language habits, and approaches to client interaction. With a focus on accessibility, autonomy, and human rights, this course strengthens inclusive leadership and prepares professionals to better support all bodies in fitness spaces.
