Additional Information

This course is designed to provide exercise professionals with an understanding of the thought processes that may be present in those suffering an eating disorder. Knowing how to Identify - communicate and support clients with or at risk of eating disorders is covered in this course as well as how to work with allied health professionals to bring about positive changes in their lives. One of the key indicators of anorexia is excessive exercise. Most of the time the sufferer will not disclose that there is an issue. For other eating disorders - physically a problem may not be apparent - but by looking out for certain behaviours and knowing key questions to ask - they may be identified. This course was put together from a personal lived experience - academic study and a passion to make a difference in this area. The course has been revised and has the support of the Inside Out Institute for Eating Disorders. Brazen Growth

Eleni Psillakis is the Director of BrazenGrowth and winner of the Filex 2016 Inspiration Award for efforts in raising awareness of eating disorders in the fitness industry. She has presented at the 2017 and 2018 National Eating Disorders and Obesity Conference. Eleni has collaborated with Dr. Sarah Maguire from the InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders - and headed up the steering committee that developed guidelines on eating disorders for the fitness industry. These guidelines were launched in February 2020. Eleni also co-developed the online program that is co-branded with the InsideOut Institute for eating disorders. The workshop “Supporting Clients at risk of Eating Disorders' in the Fitness Industry hopes to bring an understanding of eating disorders as serious mental illnesses. It is offered as a face-to-face course and also as a live virtual workshop via zoom. The course includes identifying the characteristics of the main eating disorders - screening to determine risk - the contraindications for exercise when certain compensatory behaviours are engaged - effective communication with the sufferer for early intervention - referral to allied health professionals - and how exercise professionals can work as part of a team to make a positive difference to the person concerned. BrazenGrowth was formed out of a wealth of educational experience - both professionally and personally. The word brazen means to boldly and unashamedly face and overcome challenges. And life is full of challenges! How we deal with these can impact our lives in a positive or negative way and then another set of challenges is created for us to cope with. It is so easy to mask or ignore these challenges. Ultimately - our mental health can be affected and this impacts on our work life - our relationships and our physical health. BrazenGrowth aims to encourage individuals to face - open up and work through these challenges by addressing issues that are not easily discussed in our everyday lives. These issues can affect our abilities - our goals - our self-esteem and sense of worth. Every part of our health affects the other. Physical - mental - emotional and social health - are interrelated. If one of these areas suffers - the others do also. This course will equip you to help make a difference to the total health of clients that may be engaging in disordered eating - excessive exercise and /or other compensatory behaviours.
